This leads to a lot of confusion, people often think going for a higher dpi increases the clarity of the image. Graphics programs, such as snagit, allow the user to stipulate the number of pixels per inch (also called dpi or dots per inch) for the output. When someone captures an image they have no control over the number of pixels used for the screen object. When programmers create forms (which are dipslayed as windows, dialog boxes, and so on) they set the size at design time (the size can be changed at run time but the process is similar). The important thing to remember is 'native' resolution for Windows is 96 pixels per inch, Mac 72 ppi.
